Invoking one of Western civilization’s most cherished scenes from classical antiquity, this dynamic figurative bronze sculpture Ulysses and the Sirens draws its central inspiration from the epic poems of Homer and Ovid. Additional influences include the painting of the same scene by famous Classicist painter Herbert James Draper, and the sonorous Cream tune “Tales of Brave Ulysses.”
Seen here, we find the celebrated Greek hero Ulysses executing a bold plan to hear the oracular songs of the sirens, but without falling prey to the deadly allure of their otherworldly music. As Ulysses’ ship passes by their island, the treacherous sirens enthrall the famous hero with enchanting promises to fulfill his deepest desire: to know the answers to the greatest mysteries of existence.
