This life-scale bronze sculpture of male and female intertwined arms is called Pillar because it symbolizes the bond of altruism that elevates human beings above the base and brutal fight for survival.

Pillar is about reaching down and helping others up, in every sense; divine/mortal, stranger/stranger, friend/friend, man/woman, wife/husband. It can also be flipped top-to-bottom, illustrating the reciprocal nature of a shared altruistic bond, the basis of love and friendship. Pillar was inspired in part by the upwelling of support that I experienced in San Francisco from friends and strangers alike, when I was stranded far from my home city of New Orleans by the devastation of hurricane Katrina in 2005. Pillar was also inspired by the marriage of two dear friends who I was visiting at that time to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Pillar is modeled after their clasped arms.
