The Greek goddess of night, known as Nyx, is seen descending to the Earth with the weightless ease of a shadow. Eternally young, and predating the gods of the Olympic pantheon, even Zeus chose against crossing this mysterious and powerful primordial goddess. Nyx is depicted here balanced on the cusp of day and night, night and dark, perched upon a cube that’s adorned only with a small inscription of an old Latin saying on the back: omnes una manet nox (“the same night awaits us all”). Intriguingly, this image of Nightfall came to me uninvited late one night outside of a San Francisco playhouse via a trick of the shadows on a poster inside of the theatre window. When I returned for a closer look the next day, I discovered that what I had seen as this haunting image of Nyx, had only been an illusion. Nightfall is that illusion, transformed into a figurative bronze sculpture to be preserved for millennia to come.
