Inspired by Ovid’s eloquent telling in his epic poem Metamorphoses, this figurative bronze sculpture of the princess Andromeda is only partly about the beauty of vulnerability and the inviolable grace of the feminine spirit…frequently recurring themes in my work. With Andromeda I also aim to convey the sense of heroism that arises in the heart of the great hero Perseus when he discovers this lovely damsel in her greatest hour of distress, and immediately intervenes to rescue her. I feel that this brash and glorious spark of heroism is a lighthouse within the human spirit, and a central role of the artist is to remind us of our deepest and brightest human virtues.
I know of no myth in all the world’s mythologies which better captures the joy and romance of heroism than the tale of Andromeda’s rescue by the noble Perseus. And this ancient Greek passion for the divinity of heroism remains a daily inspiration for my life and work.
